OEM vs ODM vs Private Label for Pet Products: Which Is Right for Your Brand?
· 7 min read

When you source pet products from a manufacturer, you will hear three terms again and again: OEM, ODM and private label. They are often used loosely, but the differences matter. Each model changes how much you invest, how quickly you can launch, how much the product is truly yours, and what MOQ you can expect. This guide explains each model in plain terms and helps you decide which one fits your brand today.
What is OEM for pet products?
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) means the factory produces a product to your design and specifications. You provide drawings, a reference sample or a detailed tech pack; the factory handles pattern making, tooling, materials sourcing, production and packaging. You get the most control over how the product looks and performs.
- Best for: established brands with their own designs
- Control: highest — the design is yours
- Investment: higher, especially where new molds or patterns are needed
- Lead time: longest, because development and sampling come first

What is ODM for pet products?
ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) means you start from a design the factory has already developed, then customise it — colours, fabrics, sizes, logo, packaging, sometimes small structural changes. Because the base design and tooling exist, development is faster and cheaper than OEM.
- Best for: growing brands that want custom products without full development cost
- Control: medium — you shape an existing design
- Investment: moderate
- Lead time: shorter than OEM
Our ODM pet products service is built on a range of 245+ products in 12 categories, so there is usually a starting point close to what you need.
What is private label for pet products?
Private label means selling an existing factory product under your own brand, mainly by adding your logo, labels and packaging. The product itself stays largely as it is. It is the quickest and lowest-risk way to launch or extend a pet range.
- Best for: new brands, retailers, distributors and e-commerce sellers testing a market
- Control: lower over design, high over branding
- Investment: lowest
- Lead time: fastest

How MOQ works across the three models
MOQ is driven by materials and setup. Private label orders on existing items need the least setup, so they allow the lowest quantities. ODM changes such as a custom fabric add material batch minimums. OEM projects with new molds or patterns need enough volume to justify tooling. At SenYue, MOQ varies by product and typically starts from 100 pcs per item.
Which model is right for you?
Choose private label if
You need to launch quickly, keep cash commitment low, or test a new category or market.
Choose ODM if
You want products that look and feel like your brand — your colours, fabrics and packaging — without paying for full development.
Choose OEM if
You have a unique design, a clear market and the volume to support tooling, and you want maximum differentiation.
What stays the same in every model
Whichever route you choose, the fundamentals are the same at SenYue: samples before bulk production, pre-shipment inspection as described in our quality control page, and shipping by FOB China main port, door-to-door or Amazon FBA-ready to North America, Europe, Australia and Asia, including Turkey and Ukraine.

What is the difference between OEM and ODM?
OEM means the factory manufactures your own design. ODM means you customise a design the factory has already developed, which is faster and usually cheaper.
Is private label the same as ODM?
Not quite. Private label mainly adds your branding to an existing product, while ODM also changes product details such as colours, fabrics or sizes.
Which model has the lowest MOQ?
Private label on existing items usually has the lowest MOQ. At SenYue, MOQ varies by product and typically starts from 100 pcs per item.
Can I switch from private label to OEM later?
Yes. Many brands start with private label, move best sellers to ODM, and develop OEM products once demand is proven.
